Electric room heater: units per month in Pakistan
Short answer. A 1,800 watt electric heater used four hours an evening consumes 7.2 units a day and about 216 units a month. That is comparable to running an air conditioner through the summer, and it is why households in Murree, Quetta or Abbottabad frequently see their highest bills in January rather than July.

Every resistive heater is exactly as efficient as every other
Fan heater, halogen rod, quartz, ceramic, oil-filled radiator — all of them convert essentially 100 per cent of the electricity into heat. A 2,000 watt heater of any type delivers 2,000 watts of heat.
So marketing claims that one type is more economical than another are, in energy terms, false. What differs is how the heat is delivered and how the thermostat behaves.
What genuinely differs
Halogen and quartz heaters radiate directly at people, so they feel warm immediately and can be run at lower power for the same perceived comfort. They heat objects, not rooms.
Oil-filled radiators heat slowly, hold heat after switch-off, and cycle under a thermostat — so over a long evening they may run at full power for only part of the time and the average draw is lower than the rating.
Fan heaters heat air fast and lose it fast, which makes them good for a short warm-up and poor for sustained use.
The gas comparison
Where gas is available, a gas heater delivers heat far more cheaply in Pakistan on current prices. Winter gas load shedding is precisely why households buy electric heaters as backup — and then use them as primary.
A household that has quietly switched from gas to electric heating over a winter will see it on the bill before it notices it in the habit.
How to use less
- Heat the person, not the building. A radiant heater aimed at a seating area at 800 W beats a 2,000 W convector warming an entire room.
- Close the room. Heating a space that opens onto a cold corridor is heating the corridor.
- Use a thermostat or timer — an oil-filled radiator with a working thermostat cycles off, a bare rod heater never does.
- Draught-proof under doors and around window frames before buying a bigger heater.
- Never run a heater in an unoccupied room, and never overnight in a closed room with an unvented gas alternative.

Which type of electric heater uses the least electricity?
None of them, at the same wattage — they are all essentially 100 per cent efficient. The saving comes from using a lower wattage heater directed at people, and from a thermostat that actually switches it off.
Why is my winter bill higher than my summer bill?
Almost always electric heating and an electric geyser running together. Between them, a 1,800 W heater for four hours and a geyser left on can add well over 500 units a month, which exceeds most summer air conditioning.
