Common questions about meters
Which reading on my meter is the one that gets billed?
The cumulative kilowatt-hour total — the screen marked kWh or coded 1.8.0 on a digital meter, and the digits excluding the red final one on an old disc meter. Every other display is diagnostic information, not a billing figure.
Can I check whether my meter is accurate without paying for a test?
Yes. Switch off every circuit and confirm the meter stops, then run a single known load such as a 2,000 watt geyser for exactly one hour — the register should advance by close to 2 units. A result within a few per cent means the meter is fine and the problem is elsewhere in your installation.
What should I record when my meter is replaced?
The old meter's final reading, the new meter's initial reading, both meter numbers, the new seal numbers, and the multiplying factor — then check all of them against the first bill afterwards. Meter changeovers are where billing errors are introduced.
Is it safe to open my meter cover or move the meter myself?
No, and it is the single most damaging thing a consumer can do. The seals are the company's evidence that the meter has not been interfered with, and breaking one shifts the burden of explanation onto you regardless of your intention.
