Short answer. A microwave labelled 1,000 watts of cooking power draws around 1,400 watts from the socket. Twenty minutes a day works out at roughly 0.47 units daily and about 14 units a month — small, because it is used in minutes rather than hours.

Cooking power versus input power
The number on the front panel is how much microwave energy reaches the food. Generating it is not free, and the magnetron plus the turntable and fan mean the socket sees appreciably more.
For bill arithmetic, use the input rating on the back plate rather than the marketing figure on the front.
Why it is the efficient way to reheat
A microwave heats the food and almost nothing else. An electric oven heats a large insulated cavity, its own metal, and the air inside it before any energy reaches a plate of food.
For reheating a portion, a microwave is several times cheaper than an oven and usually cheaper than a hob too. For roasting a chicken it is the wrong tool and the comparison does not apply.
How to use less
- Use it for reheating and small portions instead of an electric oven or hob.
- Cover food; it heats faster and the microwave runs for less time.
- Do not use it for long defrosting cycles — moving food from freezer to fridge the night before costs nothing.
- Unplug if the standby clock is one you never look at; it is small, but it runs 8,760 hours a year.
