MEPCO Bill Check: South Punjab Consumer Guide

Everything MEPCO consumers in Multan, Bahawalpur, Rahim Yar Khan, and South Punjab need to know — how to check your MEPCO bill online, understand the reference number, decode your bill, and pay it on time.

What is MEPCO and which areas does it serve?

MEPCO — Multan Electric Power Company — is the electricity distribution company responsible for southern Punjab, one of Pakistan's largest and most agriculturally intensive regions. MEPCO holds a NEPRA licence to distribute electricity across Multan, Bahawalpur, Dera Ghazi Khan, Rahim Yar Khan, Muzaffargarh, Khanewal, Vehari, Lodhran, Bahawalnagar, and Layyah. Together these ten districts cover a territory that is larger than most Pakistani provinces and contains millions of residential, commercial, agricultural, and industrial consumers.

If your electricity meter is in any of these districts, MEPCO issues your monthly bill through the PITC (Power Information Technology Company) billing platform at bill.pitc.com.pk. Every MEPCO duplicate bill you open — whether through this site or directly via PITC — comes from that single authoritative source.

How to check your MEPCO bill online

The MEPCO bill check process is straightforward and takes under a minute. You need one thing: your MEPCO reference number (10 to 14 digits, printed at the top-left of any bill you have). Enter it into the MEPCO bill checker on this page, and the official PITC duplicate opens — showing the current billing month's statement exactly as MEPCO generated it.

No account is required, no fee is charged, and no personal data is stored. The reference number is passed directly to PITC, and whatever comes back is displayed as-is. You can then read the bill, verify the charges, and download or print a PDF using Ctrl+P.

  • Find your reference number on any old MEPCO bill, SMS alert, or payment receipt
  • Enter it into the MEPCO bill checker (10–14 digits, no spaces or dashes)
  • The official PITC duplicate opens in your browser
  • Press Ctrl+P → Save as PDF to download a copy
  • Use the PDF for payment, records, or documentation

Where is the MEPCO reference number?

The MEPCO reference number is printed in the Consumer Detail box at the top-left of every MEPCO electricity bill, on the row labelled 'Reference No.' It runs 10 to 14 digits with no spaces or dashes. The shorter Consumer ID printed just below it identifies the account but cannot be used on its own to retrieve a bill online.

The reference number belongs to the meter, not to the account holder — so a number from a bill several years old is still valid for checking the current cycle. If you have lost all printed bills, check an old JazzCash or Easypaisa receipt for a MEPCO payment, or ring your MEPCO sub-division office with your address and they will read the number back to you.

Reading your MEPCO bill: tariff, slabs, and South Punjab specifics

A MEPCO bill follows the same NEPRA building blocks as any other DISCO: a slab-based energy charge, a monthly Fuel Price Adjustment (FPA), GST, Electricity Duty, TV licence fee, meter rent where applicable, and a Financing Cost surcharge. What makes South Punjab distinct is the seasonal demand pattern. The region runs through one of the hottest and longest summers in Pakistan — April to September — with AC and tube-well irrigation both peaking at the same time. This double load frequently pushes consumers from lower into higher tariff slabs, making the per-unit cost of the last hundred units far higher than the first hundred.

On your MEPCO bill, the circle and sub-division names identify the feeder area within the district. They do not affect your tariff — that is set by your consumer category (domestic A-1 or A-2, commercial, agricultural, or industrial) and your monthly units consumed. The protected consumer rate applies to domestic households that average 200 units or fewer per month.

  • Energy charge: slab-based, domestic consumers use A-1 or A-2 tariff
  • FPA: a per-unit monthly surcharge approved by NEPRA based on fuel costs
  • GST: 18% on the taxable value of the bill
  • Electricity Duty: a provincial levy on the energy charge
  • TV licence fee: flat monthly charge on residential connections
  • Financing Cost surcharge: per-unit levy for sector debt servicing
  • Meter rent: small monthly fixed charge on some connection types
  • Arrears: any balance unpaid from the previous cycle

Why MEPCO bills are highest in summer

South Punjab's summer is longer and hotter than the rest of Punjab. Multan, Bahawalpur, and Rahim Yar Khan regularly see daytime highs above 44°C from May to August, driving continuous air conditioner use. At the same time, the cotton-growing belt's irrigation pumps run at full capacity — adding an agricultural load on top of the residential peak. The combined effect pushes monthly units sharply upward, and because NEPRA's slab tariff steps up at each tier boundary, those extra units are charged at the most expensive rate.

If your July or August MEPCO bill is significantly higher than March, the cause is almost always the consumption-to-slab interaction rather than an error. Open the bill and compare the 'Units Consumed' figure to the previous month. A jump of 100 or more units — entirely typical for a household adding summer AC — can move you one or two slab boundaries, making the total rise far faster than the raw unit count would suggest.

How to pay your MEPCO electricity bill

MEPCO bills can be paid through all major digital channels without visiting a counter. The reference number on the duplicate bill is the only thing you need:

  • JazzCash: open Bill Payment → select MEPCO → enter reference number → verify amount → confirm
  • Easypaisa: same flow; also available on *786# for basic handsets
  • Bank apps: HBL, UBL, MCB, Meezan, Allied and others all list MEPCO under utility billers
  • 1Link ATMs: Bill Payment section at any 1Link machine; have the reference written down first
  • Bank branch or post office: pay over the counter with the printed bill
  • Online banking: NIFT, IBFT-enabled banks allow utility payments through internet banking portals

MEPCO complaints, billing disputes, and helpline

If your MEPCO bill shows an unusually high amount or a meter reading that looks wrong, the process is: note the readings exactly as printed, then contact your MEPCO sub-division office or call the MEPCO helpline. For billing disputes that cannot be resolved at sub-division level, escalate to NEPRA's consumer complaint portal at nepra.org.pk, or to the Prime Minister's Delivery Unit (PMDU). MEPCO cannot correct a bill through any online bill-check tool — corrections require a formal complaint through official channels.

The formal MEPCO complaint route: (1) Sub-division office or helpline → (2) MEPCO circle-level complaint if SDO does not resolve → (3) PMDU or NEPRA complaint portal. Keep your reference number and the disputed bill's PDF at hand for every step.
