Why it is so much lower than a desktop
Every component is designed to run from a battery, which means low-power processors, an efficient integrated display and aggressive idle states. A desktop optimises for performance and has no such constraint.
For anyone whose work is documents, browsing and video calls, a laptop does the same job for a third of the energy.
Charging and leaving it plugged in
Once the battery is full, a laptop draws only what it is using; the charger is not continuously pushing power into a full battery.
Leaving it plugged in is therefore not an energy problem. It is a battery longevity question, which is a different subject and where the charge-limit settings on modern machines are aimed.
How to use less
- Lower screen brightness — the display is one of the largest single consumers in a laptop.
- Use the balanced or efficiency power plan rather than high performance for ordinary work.
- Unplug the charger when the machine is away; an idle charger draws a small standby load.
- For long stationary use, an external monitor at low brightness plus a closed lid is not cheaper — it is an extra display.
