Mobile phone charging: units per month in Pakistan
Short answer. Charging a phone from empty to full uses roughly 0.02 to 0.03 units. Doing that every day for a year costs about 9 units — less than a single evening of air conditioning. A household charging four phones daily is at roughly 3 units a month.
Power draw
- Low: 5 W
- Typical: 18 W — the figure used in every calculation below
- High: 65 W
Fast chargers draw their rated power only during the first part of a charge and taper sharply after about 60 per cent.
Units and cost by usage pattern
Each row is 18 W × the hours shown ÷ 1,000, over 30 days. The three cost columns exist because the rupee cost of a unit depends entirely on which slab your month lands in — the same consumption costs a light user and a heavy summer household very different amounts. Rates are illustrative and not a substitute for the tariff table printed on your own bill.
| Usage pattern | Units / day | Units / month | At Rs 12.5/unit | At Rs 27.5/unit | At Rs 36/unit |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| One phone, full charge daily (about 1.5 hours effective) | 0.03 | 0.8 | Rs 10 | Rs 22 | Rs 29 |
| Four phones in a household | 0.11 | 3.2 | Rs 40 | Rs 88 | Rs 115 |
Rate bands: Rs 12.5 — light user, protected (≈150 units/month); Rs 27.5 — average household (≈250 units/month); Rs 36 — heavy summer month (700+ units). This appliance runs all year, so the monthly figure applies in every cycle.
The arithmetic people find hard to believe
A large phone battery holds about 5,000 mAh at around 3.8 volts, which is roughly 19 watt-hours. Allowing for charging losses, call it 25 watt-hours from the socket — 0.025 units.
At any Pakistani slab rate that is a fraction of a rupee. The intuition that a device charged every day must be expensive comes from how often it happens, not from how much it uses.
Chargers left plugged in
A modern charger with nothing attached draws well under a tenth of a watt. Left plugged in all year that is under 1 unit.
It is worth unplugging cheap, uncertified chargers for safety reasons — a poorly made one can fail dangerously — but not for the electricity.
How to use less
- There is nothing meaningful to save here; spend the attention on cooling, water heating and lighting instead.
- Do unplug uncertified chargers, for fire safety rather than for units.
- Use one multi-port charger rather than several separate ones, mainly for tidiness.
Frequently asked questions
How much does it cost to charge a phone in Pakistan?
Roughly 0.025 units per full charge — a fraction of a rupee even at the highest domestic slab rate. Charging daily for a year costs about the same as running an air conditioner for three hours.
Do phone chargers waste electricity when plugged in with no phone?
Under 1 unit a year for a modern charger. The safety argument for unplugging cheap chargers is much stronger than the energy one.
